Friday afternoon, as I me packing to leave, Richard swung by my Office.
"How it goes? ''
I pointed the bags under my eyes. "I think that this says it all."
"Looks like you always do."
"God, I hope not."
"What are you doing this weekend?" he asked.
"Nothing and I could not be happier on this subject. ''
"Are you serious? '' It's finally been. This is not the end of week to Hibernate. »
He was right. It was 90 degrees outside and sticky. "Fracture pain is season," I protested. "He wants Ben and Jerry regardless of the degree of heat, it is outside".
"Josie,", said Richard. "You all wrong. Break-ups should whip you in better shape so that you can outkick your coverage when it comes to the other person you sleep with. "He pulled my chair in my Office so fast that it startled me and I yelped."Let's go have a drink. For you, Mademoiselle vodka soda. »
"I drink that way," I grumbled.
Richard and I ended up at an Irish pub a few blocks from our Office. I realized that I didn't really that much about him other than the fact that it was 26-year-old Long Island and that he liked the IPAs.
"What makes you enter in the edition of the book?" I asked, shaking my straw in the vodka soda that Richard had ordered for me.
I have read Bright Lights, Big City when I was 15 years old and was determined to work to a high front magazine, just like the main character." Richard shrugged. "The position of entry-level to a magazine is an Assistant of edition, same as in the edition of books. When I got this job a few years ago I thought that I could possibly go to magazines. "He shook his head. "Does not work like that. But this work always has a creative component, which I love. Moreover, I think learning the industry from the inside is a good way to establish connections. Maybe I'll write a book of my own one day. »
"I'm a writer too! I said. "I have a book coming out in September."
"Wait, you're serious? '' Richard asked. "How you never mentioned this before? ''
«Of», I cleared my throat. "I have some reservations on this subject." I explained the concept of the book. How it was a small publishing house which had approached me. "It is not the same as coming up with your own idea and go around until you find an agent and a Publisher," I said. "It is really fabricated and forms."
"Why are you pissed off about yourself? '' Richard asked. "This is not the next great American novel... you're what?" Twenty-four? You have the time. »
"Twenty-five," I said.
"Nevermind. I take it back. You spent your first". Richard smiled to me.
I elbow him. "What do you think? '' I asked. "You know everything about my relationship drama. You owe me a chapter of your choice."
"I would give him upwards if I got it." Richard took a SIP of his beer. "But I've never been in a relationship before."
"What do you mean you have never been in a relationship before? ''
"Exactly what I just said,' Richard began to laugh. "I'm a Virgin relationship."
"But not like a real Virgin-Virgin, non? ''
Richard gave me a look and I held my hands. "Just a question."
"I just don't really believe in monogamy, ' said Richard.
"How convenient for you."
"It is not just an excuse to have sex with as many people as I want, you know." Richard took a SIP of his drink and smiled. "Although it helps with it also."
"Ugh."Gross.
"Relax," he said. "I'm just playing with you. In all honesty, my parents had a marriage really screwed up, and even more fucked upwards of divorce. "I just have never seen this idea of being with someone for the rest of your life settled for anyone."
Even though I was proof that monogamy does not always work, I couldn't imagine the idea of being alone for the rest of my life. I couldn't imagine being an old woman with a lot of cats and a particularly portly Bulldog, but this would be a result to continue to choose men who are afraid of commitment, not a conscious choice. "What about the children? '' I asked.
"The love of others. Don't want any of my own."
'You're better than me', I said. "I don't even like others."
"You Monster! He pointed to my drink. "Who ended up. I have a date in an hour and I have to run home and change."
The word 'date' has taken me by surprise, and I can't really explain why. I certainly didn't think Richard and I were at a date right then, and he was as having betrayed me or anything. And it was not yet as I wanted to go on a date with him. There was a mild flirtation between the two of us, but we had the impression to understand that there's a line, and we would not cross it.
I knocked out the rest of my drink and dug around in my purse for my wallet.
'Stop', Richard said. He dropped a $20 on the table. "I got this."
"Are you sure? ''
He gave me a kiss on the cheek. "I am opposed to monogamy, not of chivalry.
'Thank you', I said. "This really cheer me up."
As I've torn off in a taxi that Richard hailed to me, I realized the most side of breaking up (apart from the weight loss and outkicking your coverage the next time), is look at all the good people in your life.
